How Modern Modesty is a Form of Biblical Strength
-Kat Hawley Cook
In today's society, femininity is constantly under attack. But true femininity is not weak. It is strong. It is powerful! And we can find many examples of powerful women in the bible to model ourselves after.
These biblical women are especially suited to help women today seeking inspiration in their faith and lifestyle. Today, there are several ways we can incorporate their example, one of which is the way we dress.
I started a modest clothing company because I love my God and want to worship Him in the way I present myself to the world. How do the examples of these powerful women in the bible support a modern Christian women's decision to dress modestly?
Esther
Esther 2:15-17 highlights Esther’s inner qualities and character which led to her being chosen as queen. She found favor with all those around her and portrayed confidence and faith through hard times.
Esther's decision to approach the king highlights her incredible courage, a pivotal moment where she declares, “If I perish, I perish.” This act of faith not only showcases her bravery, but her devotion to her people.
Today you can follow her example by your own external portayal of faith through modesty. Faith empowers you to embrace your identity and set aside the fears of the world--fear of what people will think or say. Modesty can help you embrace the grace and purpose that Esther represented.
Ruth
Ruth is an amazing example of faith and loyalty in the bible. Following the death of her husband, she made the courageous decision to follow her mother-in-law back to Bethlehem, “Where you go, I will go; where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God” (Ruth 1:16).”
By dressing modestly you can embrace the values of Ruth, whose loyalty and faith continue to inspire me. Modesty can be a reflection of character and show what you believe and feel.
Mary, Mother of Jesus
Mary is a profound figure in the Bible, exemplifying virtue and courage. When she was chosen to bear the Son of God, she accepted this call with strength and faith: “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord.”
Her resilience and love nurtured the Christ child and her steadfast example of obedience continues to inspire many today.
Mary submitted her whole life to Christ. Her body, mind, and soul. One way we can do that in our everyday life is submitting to the will of God, and dressing in a way that glorifies him.
Power in Appearance
Just as these women exemplify strength and virtue, the way we dress can be an outward expression of our inner commitments. We can portray confidence, power, and virtue like these women of old. At Poet Dresses, I want women to feel both confident and cute, while staying modest and upholding the virtue they value. Express how you feel on the inside by what you wear on the outside. Like Esther of the Old Testament, you can show your beauty and character.
